Gaining Early Awareness and Readiness for Undergraduate Programs (GEAR UP) is a federal discretionary grant program designed to increase the number of low-income students who are prepared to enter and succeed in postsecondary education. GEAR UP provides six-year grants to states and partnerships to provide services at high-poverty middle and high schools. GEAR UP grantees serve an entire cohort of students beginning no later than the seventh grade and follow the cohort through high school. GEAR UP funds are also used to provide college scholarships to low-income students.
College Admissions Made Possible has a history of involvement with GEAR UP. We currently have a partnership with The University of Alabama at Birmingham for GEAR UP Alabama and recently established a partnership with the University of Montevallo for GEAR UP Jefferson County.
To support the execution of these GEAR UP projects, CAMP provides college counseling and career advising sessions, as well as ACT test preparation. Between GEAR UP Alabama and GEAR UP Jefferson County, CAMP impacts more than 14,000 students in 55 schools across 27 school systems.
